According to the last estimates made by the CNC, admissions in film theatres reached 23.97 millions in December 2016. On three different occasions in 2016, historically high levels of admissions have been reached: in February (25.99 million admissions), October (21.20 millions) and December.
In 2016, cinema admissions totalled 212.71 millions, up 3.6%, reaching the second highest level of admissions in 50 years (217.19 millions in 2011). For the third consecutive year, the number of admissions exceeds 200 millions. Theater attendance in France in 2016 remains the highest in Europe.

Increase in the attendance of French films
The attendance of French films has grown by 3.1% to reach 75.17 million admissions in 2016. The market share of French films is 35.3% in 2016 (35.5% in 2015).
Strong increase in admissions for American films
In 2016, American films registered 111.80 million admissions, up 5.5% compared with 2015. This is the highest level since 1958 (112.90 millions). The market share of American films is 52.6% in 2016 (52.0% in 2015).
Non-French and non-American films gathered 12.1% of total admissions in 2016 (12.5% in 2015). Their admissions decreased by 2.7% to 25.74 milllions.
In 2016, 25 films attracted more than 2 million admissions
A particularly high number of films registered more than 2 million admissions in 2016, with 25 films over this threshold. 51 films totalled more that 1 million admissions (44 films in 2015). The number of films over 500,000 admissions is one of the highest in the decade with 103 films. No film has exceeded the 5-million admission mark.

18 French films over 1 million admissions
Many French films were successful in 2016 : 18 French films registered more than 1 million admissions (14 in 2015), and 41 films gathered more than 500,000 admissions, the highest number in the decade.

19 American films registered more than 2 million admissions
In 2016, no American film has reached more than 5 million admissions. 10 American films registered over 3 million admissions, as in 2015. 19 American films totalled more than 2 million admissions, the highest number since 2007, and 59 exceeded 500,000 admissions.
